My Education
My story
A Life of Music
and Hacking.
Most of my life was centered around being on stage. Growing up all I can remember was tapping and beating on things. There is a well-known story in my family that, in the womb, I used to kick my mother in time. Most of my childhood was spent in my father’s music studio, playing with his beat machines. My father is a pianist/MIDI programmer. It was common to wake up to Bach being played with different synth sounds. In my teenage years, I played in Punk Bands as a Gospel-inspired punk drummer. All to culminate in one of the cooler parts of my life, touring as a drummer with Triune a hip-hop artist from the Inland Empire. There I got a chance to open up for Lil Dirk, TI, Justblaze, and the Game.

TOUR LIFE

30+ years of
Public Speaking Training
I was raised as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Inside our religion we have a public speaking program called the Theocratic Ministry School. So, from age 9 onward I would routinely get up in front of a congregation of 200+ and speak on Bible-based topics. Every assignment came with a public speaking counsel point like Audience Contact, Effective Conclusions, and Effective Use of Illustrations. I can say with my music and public speaking experience that I am oddly comfortable getting up in front of thousands of people and speaking/performing. For most people this is a fear, I actually enjoy it.
The start of my 18 year journey in the Utility industry
However, during my punk rock days, I had a conversation with my father that changed the direction of my life. As I stood in the kitchen, raiding the refrigerator, as most community college Gospel Punk Rock Drummers do, my father asked me this two-part question. “Son, do you plan on having a family”? To which I answered, “Of course”. He added, “ So, how do you plan on doing that from the road”? I always considered myself an extremely logical person and to be honest I couldn’t come up with a logical answer. So, I asked him what I should do. “Get a job with a utility company or the government, they have great benefits and they’re recession-proof”. So, in 2005, I got my first Utility job with SoCal Gas Company as a Meter Reader.
Later in 2008, left the Gas Co. to join the ranks at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power as a full-time Meter Reader. For the next 16 years with the LADWP, I would learn about power generation by taking Hayden Electrical courses and Water Treatment processes. Most of my time was spent in Meter Services and Field Operations, reading, installing, and troubleshooting issues related to electric and water meters.

18+ Years in the Utility Industry
Starting a Company
In 2015 my family and I decided to embark on a business venture and form a Creative Agency named Camp Massive. There we designed and developed WordPress Sites for local businesses. It was there that I learned about Cross-Site Scripting, Brute force login mitigation, and the dredges associated with shared hosting(GoDaddy… I hate you so much). There is nothing like having a client site that you spent months doing SEO hijacked and added to a Chinese SEO botnet. Thank god for backups.

"I kinda Live Here."

My ICS / OT / SCADA Cybersecurity Journey
It was around this time that I thought it’d be a good idea to get a formal education in Cyber Security. But, at the time my employer didn’t offer Tuition Reimbursement for Cyber Security so I started taking online courses in, Wifi Hacking and any other topics I deemed interesting. Such as Malware Triage and creation. This changed after the Sandworm attack on Ukraine’s power grid. My immediate thoughts were, I work for the Company responsible for supplying the 5th largest economy with electricity…what are we doing about this? What if they do that here? I kinda live here. It was then I started educating myself in ICS Cybersecurity and DFIR. I attend the ICS Summit in Orlando Florida. There I was introduced to Rob Lee CEO of Dragos, my eventual teacher and mentor. He and others encouraged me to take the ICS 515: Visibility, Detection, and Response. Later I would test and get my GIAC Response and Industrial Defense certification (GRID).

What are some
of your favorite hacks?
I always find this question odd in interviews, it’s like asking “what your favorite crime”? How do you answer that…assault and battery? If I had to answer I would say Sandworm. That was probably the most impactful on my Cybersecurity outlook. Other than that, I have an unnatural affinity to malware. probably because I have been a victim of it, and I know how painful it is to get off your system. I am really curious about Trisis.
